Create a bathing space that’s good for your body and soul
Whether you want to start your mornings off feeling refreshed or destress at the end of a long day (or both), your bathroom should be a place that improves your well-being. “It’s about really identifying what will relax you, where you walk in, take that big breath and think, ‘Yes, this is where I want to be right now,’” says Amy Hill, a New York-based designer with GROHE. “Your bathroom should make you happy every day, not just because it’s beautiful, but also because it meets your needs and preferences.” Read on for tips on creating a serene, uplifting space.
1. Choose Calming Hues
Start with a palette that immediately sets the stage for tranquillity. “Grays and whites create a very clean look that allows you to go in and be really calm and restful,” Hill says. Add in creams and browns for a warmer feel. Blues and hints of black take the aesthetic in a cooler direction.
Then add accent hues, Hill says. “We’ve been using a lot of Scandinavian pastels, such as dusty pinks and blues that are a little more modern and create a spa feeling.” Or try earthy ochres for a subtle golden gleam. Bring in these colors with accessories, playing with fun tones in your towels, artwork and small decorative touches such as vases and soap dispensers.
2. Embrace Nature
Start with larger surfaces such as floors when incorporating natural materials. “Nothing feels better on your feet than brushed marble with a pillowed edge,” Hill says. Complement natural stone with wood, which works well for both floors and cabinetry as long as it’s well-sealed for water resistance. Frame views with large windows whenever possible, adding window coverings three-quarters of the way up if privacy is an issue.
Hone in on the details, such as an oversize rain shower head that creates a sculptural flow reminiscent of a waterfall, Hill says. “And there should always be a plant or two in your bathroom, even if it’s just a bud vase with eucalyptus branches, just so you have something alive inside.”
3. Go Airy and Minimal
Try an open layout, which naturally feels peaceful and uncluttered. “Always use frameless glass wherever you can, so vertical lines don’t cut up the shower area,” Hill says. Float countertops, select wall-hung toilets and tuck storage behind mirrors or in niches to further streamline the look.
Keep shower controls slim too, as with the all-in-one panel seen here. “Everything is integrated in one place, so it looks sleek and minimal on your wall,” Hill says. Install some curved fixtures such as a round rain shower head to “add some softness and make everything feel inviting,” she adds.
4. Focus on Bathing Areas
Think about whether you want a shower, bath or both. Do you prefer to cleanse with a rousing rinse or meditate in a tub brimming with bubbles? Whatever your preference, your bathing spot is key to any bathroom wellness routine.
A rain shower is de rigueur for unwinding, while hand showers are helpful for rinsing out shampoo. A bathtub, on the other hand, should have a gorgeous filler that stands on its own. “Add a statement light over the bathtub to make it feel really special,” Hill says, or lean a large mirror against the wall to further spotlight the space.
5. Personalize With Technology
For the ultimate indulgence, install precise shower controls to make tailoring your experience easy. The three-function thermostatic trim seen here (also available with one or two functions) has push-and-turn knobs that allow everyone in your family to personalize their shower.
Choose the desired spray source (rain shower, hand shower or body shower) with the push of a button and adjust water volume and temperature with a turn. The system will automatically save your preferences for your next drench. Built-in technology prevents any water temperature fluctuations, from start to finish. “The best technology is one that makes our life easier without even having to think about it,” Hill says.
After all, a true retreat has everything exactly as you want it, she notes. “The true luxury is about the space being personalized to your use. Everything is dialed in to your needs.”
