Bathroom Storage: Where to Keep the Towels

by Shawn Gauthier

Clever nooks, rails and baskets keep fluffy towels right at hand

If you're anything like me, you’ve got your guest towels stuffed in the back of a linen closet, only to make an appearance upon the arrival of visitors. Or, your hand towels are just dangling from a ho-hum hook, hopelessly lacking pizzazz. Which got me thinking: There must be a better way to display my towels in the bathroom in an organized and stylish fashion. My hunt began with a favorable outcome. As you’ll see in the following photos, there are several ways to suitably sneak bathroom towels into your décor. Scroll through and say a blissful sayonara to towel troubles.

If you’re ahead of the game (thinking currently of remodeling or planning to remodel), make a list of everything you’ll need to store in the bathroom, and then be sure to make room for it. This architect cleverly created square storage spaces in the body of the tub’s tiling. It's the perfect spot for extra towels.

Towel racks are not just for the wall. Consider placing them directly on a bathroom built-in near the sink. In effect, the hand towels become apart of the overall look instead of a standby necessity.

Have a freestanding bath? Add a rail along the edge for towels! This is such a simple solution to make the towels easily accessible from the tub; plus the look adds an interesting detail to the tub’s exterior.

Don’t want to add anything to the tub? Have no fear. Scavenge flea markets for unique pieces that can act as a towel rack. This distressed piece brings both charm and utility to the space.

Here’s another thought if you’re in the planning stages of a bathroom: storage amongst the cabinets. By simply raising the countertop and slipping in four narrow slats, this homeowner instantly has useful storage space for towels.

Design tip: If towels are on display, be sure to consider their appearance by coordinating colors and patterns. This orange pops against the sea-green tiles.

Instead of racks, consider creating a display by rolling a collection of individual hand towels and placing them in a wicker basket. Guests will appreciate both the appearance and the use of a fresh towel. Be sure to include a separate spot for used towels.

Get creative! This scale, found in an antique shop and once used for fruits and veggies in a grocery store, is especially fun and unique when repurposed as a towel holder.

Sometimes the best solution for towels (and other accessories) is adding freestanding cabinetry for optimal storage. If this is the case, seek a piece with some interest, such as this distressed antique. The glass-paneled doors allow for guests to easily spot what they’re looking for.

Baskets can really prove to be your best friend in the bathroom. Placing a stylish basket beside the tub puts the towels in close proximity and adds a visual element.

Think sleek shelving with open space: It’s a very clean and contemporary way to sneak those towels into the décor. I like how the top shelf holds stones for a unique design detail, juxtaposing aesthetic with function.

This wrought iron stand adds a simplistic elegance to this bathroom without appearing too heavy in the space. Placed directly between the tub and shower, the towels are always right at hand.

If you’re gunning for an extra element of interest, think ladders. The rungs provide excellent spots for both hanging and display. This is a slight cheat seeing as this ladder is shown in a living space, but it could be easily replicated in the bathroom.

Here’s another example of adding a rack directly to the tub. Racks by the windows provide additional hanging space.

Get a hand from a friend! Draping towels around sculptures or other appropriate accessories is both fun and clever. Guests will surely get a kick out of your creativity!
